When I was growing up—the son of a Baptist minister—I just knew that someday I'd be an architect, or an artist, or an archeologist. I was equally convinced that I would never pursue a career as a circus freak (although I do possess some qualifications for that). I had no interest in proctology, anything having to do with sewage, or in being,…a pastor. And yet, here I am, a pastor-in-process. Go figure.
It comforts me somehow to read the Bible and discover again and again that God has a sense of humor, that he delights to take the surprising course. He appoints old men, children, outcasts, nobodies, has-beens, and even donkies to do his work. The Bible tells a lot of stories about deeply-flawed men and women coming to know the Living God and finding in their own weaknesses the occasions for God to pour out His power and showcase His glory.
I don't know about you, but I can identify with all the stumblers like King David and Simon Peter. I have been the loser—the prodigal son. I have felt like the misfit, like some guy named Ehud (look it up) that live in the stories of God's redeeming work. It tells me that He can love, and change, and use somebody like me. It also tells me that no one is beyond the reach of His forgiveness and incomprehensible power—through His Son Jesus Christ. He is all about finding what was lost, restoring what was broken, giving life to what was dead, and kindling an unfailing hope for those in despair.
If you've got it together and don't have much use for those who don't you might not be comfortable with us at Wallaceton. If, however, you sense your need and suspect that you can find what you need in God, come and join us as we seek Him and His kingdom together.
